Honesty:

to be truthful; to be sincere

Honesty is an idea that can be easy to understand in theory but a challenging construct to understand in practice. My grandfather told us, “Say what you mean and mean what you say.” It was then and is now a great rule to follow. However, it seems that more than ever we are being challenged by the very notion of honesty.

Most of us, most of the time, know exactly what we should do—and even why we should do it. However, there are times when we do what suits us rather than what we are called to do. Lately, this seems to be a reality that is unescapable. While the choices that we make—good or bad—are ours to make, the truths that we tell ourselves about the reason for making the choices is what is in play here.

Make the choice that you wish, but be willing and able to live the consequence(s) of that choice. Make the choice that you wish, but tell yourself the truth about why you made it and what it reflects about you. Be truthful and be sincere with yourself about who you really are.

The moment that we are willing to see ourselves for who we really are—and not the people who we wish to be—we can actually start working on becoming who we really wish to be.
